History
In 1954, the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents authorized establishment of a College of Dentistry to respond to the needs of drastically underserved areas of rural Oklahoma. In 1965, legislation was passed authorizing planning of the College. The founding dean, William E. Brown, was recruited in 1969 to initiate planning of the curriculum and facility. The first class of 16 dental hygienists graduated in spring of 1973. Three years later, the first dental class of 24 students graduated in spring 1976. The current dental clinical sciences building was opened in 1976.
The College of Dentistry offers the following degree programs: Doctor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, and Master’s degree in orthodontics and periodontics through the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Graduate College. The College also offers two residency programs, one in oral and maxillofacial surgery and one in advanced education in general dentistry.
The College currently accepts 58 dental students into each class of its four-year DDS program, 24 students into the dental hygiene program in Oklahoma City, and 26 dental hygiene students at three distance locations – Bartlesville, Ardmore and Weatherford.
The College’s academic programs are fully accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.
