| In healthy gingival epithelium "stippling" is often seen which appear as small pits in the epithelium. These are due to the deep rete pegs. In this micrograph of attached epithelium, you can see a layer of keratin. The upper layer of cells have lost their nuclei and the epithelium is called orthokeratinized. | ||||||||||
