The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a one-year fellowship in Cleft Lip and Palate/Craniofacial Surgery. This fellowship program was established in 2008 by Dr. Kevin Smith. This fellowship is in response to a large volume of cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial cases that are done by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
The fellowship is intimately involved with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program, and the fellow's primary duties are being responsible for cases done that involve cleft lip and palate, distraction osteogenesis, craniofacial surgery, and other major facial deformities.
Resources available to the department include the J.W. Keys Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic, which meets on a monthly basis with an interdisciplinary team venue in which all major specialties are represented to care for children with cleft and craniofacial deformities. Additionally, a cleft lip and palate clinic is staffed at the University of Tulsa on a monthly basis, where audiologists, speech pathologists, orthodontists, pediatricians, and surgeons meet to evaluate and recommend treatment to children with cleft and craniofacial deformities.

Requirements for the fellow include attendance to the American Cleft Lip and Palate Association meeting, obtaining PALS certification, rotation on pediatric airway management on the ORL service, rotation on Pediatric surgery service, rotation at a distant site craniofacial clinic.
Additionally, fellows are required to produce at least one publishable paper based on a research project that was accomplished during the fellowship. Additionally, the fellow is responsible for initiating a second project that will be finished by the succeeding fellow.
Applicants for the fellowship position must provide the following information:
- A letter of intent, including short and long-range goals inclusive of why they are interested in the Cleft Lip and Palate/Craniofacial Fellowship
- Three letters of recommendation
- A personal curriculum vitae
Requirements for matriculation into fellowship at the University of Oklahoma include graduation from an accredited Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training program in the United States or Canada.
