About The College

Since its inception in 1971, the College has a tradition of educating and training its students to provide the highest quality of clinical care available. In addition to clinical excellence, the curriculum is designed to prepare well-rounded practitioners who can provide dental care in a variety of clinical settings.

In addition to a Doctor of Dental Surgery program, the College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene. There are also graduate and residency programs in advanced general dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Dentistry offers the opportunity to blend science, human relations and technical skills into a satisfying profession. The mission of The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry is to improve the health of Oklahomans and shape the future of dentistry by developing highly qualified dental practitioners and scientists through excellence in education, patient care, research, community service, faculty and facilities.

History

In 1954, the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents authorized the establishment of a college of dentistry to respond to the need of underserved areas of rural Oklahoma.

The founding dean, William E. Brown, D.D.S., was recruited in 1969 to initiate planning of the curriculum and facility. In 1972, the OU College of Dentistry officially opened its doors. The first dental hygiene class, comprised of 16 students, graduated in spring 1973. The first dental class, comprised of 24 students, graduated in spring 1976.

Today, the OU College of Dentistry has more than 140 full and part-time faculty; more than 130 full and part-time staff; 39 residents; 224 dental students and 92 dental hygiene students.
