The OU Medical Center/OU Children's Physicians Dental Clinic offers a one-year general practice residency to dentists who have received a dental degree from an accredited U.S. or Canadian dental school. The program sponsors three full-time, first-year residency positions. This residency is based out of The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center, and consists of approximately 60 percent children and 40 percent adults. Residents become very familiar and competent at treating all types of various patients, including special-needs patients, the very young, behaviorally challenged as well as the healthy.
Learning Opportunities
The residents in our program gain invaluable experience in sedation dentistry, operating room dentistry and behavior modification techniques. The residents also participate in many teaching seminars and courses including:
- Advanced cardiac life support
- Orthodontic seminars
- Endodontic seminars
- History and physical course
- Prosthodontic seminars
- Medical emergency seminars
- Periodontal seminars
- Journal Club
- Treatment plan seminars
- Grand Rounds
- Oral pathology course
The Residents spend time on rotations including:
- Anesthesiology rotation - Dental Anesthesiology (three weeks)
- Medicine - (one week)
- Oral Surgery Rotation - (one month)
- Veteran's Administration Dental Clinic - (four months)
