The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery offers a one-week minimum externship in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The externship is designed to give undergraduate dental students exposure to Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery through office-based and hospital Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery experiences.
The externship typically lasts one week; however, longer externships can be arranged in advance. Externs are usually second and third-year dental students and are required to have the following:
- Curriculum vitae with 2x2 photo
- A letter of support from the dean of the College of Dentistry currently attending
- Guarantee of liability insurance during the externship. This liability insurance can be purchased personally or be done as an umbrella policy through college currently attended.
- Sign Confidentiality Agreements with hospitals
- Externs must show proof of immunizations.
* MMR: Two vaccines or positive titer. Varicella: Two vaccines or positive titer. Tdap: One adult dose (over the age of 18) within the last 10 years. Hepatitis B: 2- or 3-dose series or positive titer. COVID-19. Tuberculosis: Negative PPD Skin test or T-Spot IGRA test dated within the past 12 months. Influenza: One vaccine between September 1- March 31 each year.
- Proof of current completed HIPAA Privacy and Security training must be dated within past 12 months of visit.
- Criminal Background Check with Criminal and Sex Offender Registry and 10 panel drug screen (at applicants expense). Both dated within the past 12 months of visit.
- Proof of current Basic Life Support CPR Training
Note that this position is an unpaid position, and the University of Oklahoma is not responsible for transportation to and from the University of Oklahoma nor is responsible for housing during attendance to the externship.
