The four-year curriculum begins with foundational studies in biomedical and dental sciences, progresses to applied laboratories and simulated patient experiences, and culminates with clinical training and comprehensive patient care. Completion of the prescribed program leads to a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree. Significant opportunities for treating patients are a hallmark of the student's training at the College of Dentistry and promotes the formation of strong clinical skills and development of excellent practitioners.

Curriculum

Patient interaction begins in the first year and is accompanied by curriculum that focuses on developing a solid foundation in biomedical sciences with introduction to the various disciplines in dentistry. As students’ progress to the second year, instruction involves more hands-on exercises in which they learn to perform procedures in a laboratory or simulated (preclinical) patient environment. Third year students spend substantially more time treating patients for specific dental concerns with emphasis shifting to comprehensive management and treatment of patients in year four of the curriculum.

  • Minimum of 90 semester hours of coursework from any accredited college or university (75 hours completed prior to application) 
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA for all college level work attempted. 
  • Minimum 2.5 math and science GPA for all college level work attempted.

  • Highest score is accepted 
  • Exam score is valid for 3 years from the date of the exam. 

Subjective Criteria  

  • A minimum of 100 hours of dental shadowing 
  • Hours should reflect shadowing in at least 3 different offices of which 2 offices should be a general dental environment. 
  • Shadowing is an opportunity to observe without any associated responsibility in that setting. You should be able to reflect on these experiences and describe how they impact you. 
  • Hours should reflect a variety of specialties and dental environments and be outside of places of employment. 
  • If you have Dental Assisting hours, contact the College of Dentistry Office of Admissions for clarification. 
  • A minimum of 100 hours of community service 
  • Hours should reflect a variety of opportunities. 
  • Hours should show engagement in different types of communities. 

Prerequisites 

  • 16 hours | Biology, 2 labs minimum 
  • 8 hours | Chemistry, labs req’d 
  • 8 hours | Organic Chemistry, labs req’d 
  • 3 hours | Biochemistry 
  • 8 hours | Physics, labs req’d 
  • 3 hours | Psychology 
  • 6 hours | English 

NOTES: 

  • Applicants are required to have at least 2 Biology labs, however 4 completed labs are preferred. 
  • ALL labs must be taken in person. Online labs are not accepted by the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry DDS program. 
  • AP Advanced Placement (AP) credits will be accepted for English and Psychology. 
  • Advanced Placement (AP) credits will NOT be accepted for any science prerequisite.
