The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program is one of several residency programs offered at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, providing you the tools to propel your career in dentistry forward. Mission

The mission of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma is to be a premier advanced program for the general dentist.  We are committed to using modern techniques and are passionate about quality patient care. The graduates of our program are superiorly prepared for a career in dentistry in both simple and complex patient care and the business systems of a dental practice.

Goals and Objectives

  • Focus and develop advanced general dentistry knowledge.
  • Prepare residents for a smooth transition into private practice from clinical, communication and financial standpoints.
  • Be a completely self-sufficient department within OUCOD.
  • Encourage and promote residents with enhanced problem-solving skills for complex patient care.
  • Practice efficient residents to practice efficient four-handed dentistry.
  • Develop leadership in the residents for effective management and training of dental support team members.
  • Have a work environment others wish to emulate.
  • Encourage community service and providing patient care for in need populations.
  • Become proficient in implant placement and restoration using the latest digital techniques from CBCT analysis to scanning, designing and milling the dental restorations.

Curriculum

The program provides didactic and/or clinical training in each of the following areas:

  • Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
  • Endodontics
  • Operative Dentistry
  • Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics
  • Periodontics
  • Implants
  • Oral Pathology
  • Minor Orthodontics
  • Oral Surgery
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Dental Practice Management

If selected, you will be one of an elite group of only 5-7 residents to participate in this advanced program. The hours in the AEGD Program for residents are 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except for occasional didactic sessions, which may occur before or after these hours.  Residents may need to work beyond these hours, if needed, to keep up with patient records, treatment planning or lab work. Clinic hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and are expected to be on time and to maintain a professional appearance.

Residents will attend all classes, seminars, lectures, and meetings that are scheduled by the director of the program. These may occasionally include evening or weekend sessions that are important supplements to the program. Additionally, the residents are encouraged to give back to the community by volunteering at Crossings Community Clinic one day a month. The program starts on the first week of July and ends on the last week of June of the following year. No time off is allowed in the month of July or during orientation.

As a participant in the program, there is no tuition, instead, you will receive a stipend of $30,000 for one year program. For second year residents, you will receive a stipend of $40,000. In addition, you will receive health and professional liability insurance coverage and are entitled to 10 days of paid time off during the year.

At this time, AEGD only takes from applicants from CODA Accredited schools in the US and Canada. AEGD is unable to obtain or sponsor visas for international applicants. The applicant will be responsible for obtaining their own visa and/or other travel documentation.

Application Process

This program is a fully accredited one-year program that conforms to the standards of the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. It will prepare you to plan comprehensive patient care and then complete therapy through sequential, logical and effective treatment plans executed in a clinical setting.

Applicants must be graduates of an accredited North American dental school. Applications are accepted through the PASS program. Application deadline is September 1 of each year.

As a participant in the program, there is no tuition and you pay no fees. You will receive a stipend of $30,000 for one year residency. For the two year residency you will receive a stipend of $40,000. In addition, you will receive health and professional liability insurance coverage. Furthermore, you will be entitled to 10 days of paid time off during the year.

Only upon the satisfactory completion of the program, including both clinical and academic areas of education, will you be awarded the certificate of training in Advanced Education of General Dentistry.
