Dr. Tiwana is the Francis J. Reichmann Professor and Chairman of The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the College of Dentistry at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where he is also appointed as a Professor of Surgery in the College of Medicine. Prior to his recruitment to OU, Dr. Tiwana was the residency program director for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School/Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

He is frequently called upon to share his knowledge and clinical expertise with professional audiences both nationally and internationally in Facial Trauma, Orthognathic Surgery, and Cleft & Craniofacial Surgery.  He has delivered more than 100 national and international lectures.  In addition, as a widely published author he has contributed more than 75 publications to the professional literature and is co-editor of the internationally acclaimed textbook – Atlas of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery which has been translated into multiple languages.  He is also Editor-in-Chief of Selected Readings in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.  Dr. Tiwana also holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Pediatric Craniomaxillofacial Surgery from The American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Tiwana has also received multiple national awards from related professional organizations and is a fellow of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a founding fellow of the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, a fellow of the American College of Dentists, and is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.  He was a previous member of the Residency Review Committee in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for the Commission on Dental Accreditation and past Chair of the Committee on Education and Training for the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.  

Currently, Dr. Tiwana is a member of the Education Committee for the International Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and is a member of the board for the Osteoscience Foundation, a non-profit corporation dedicated to research and education in the area of hard and soft tissue regeneration of the craniofacial complex. Most recently, Dr. Tiwana was also elected as a Director of The American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in 2020.
