Course Overview:
Prescription opioid drugs are the most common drug class associated with drug overdose in Oklahoma. More than all other illicit drugs combined. Due to their high addiction rate, prescription opioids can lead to an unintentional addiction habit for patients or serve as a gateway to illegal drug use and abuse. Up to 23% of prescription opioids are used non-medically and dentists account for 12% of prescribed opioids in the United States. How dentists respond to the crisis is paramount. This course will review alternative options for managing acute dental pain. It will explore the trends in opioid drug use and abuse and discuss resources for patients struggling with addiction.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Mary Hamburg is a graduate from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry and Graduate Periodontics Program. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Hamburg is an Assistant Clinic Professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency and serves as an executive board member to the Oklahoma Association of Women Dentists. Dr. Hamburg is a member of the Oklahoma Dental Association, American Dental Associate and the American Association of Women Dentists. She enjoys participating in Spear Study Club and presenting continuing education courses for dental practitioners in Oklahoma. Dr. Hamburg practices in Midwest City and Yukon with Dental Implants and Endodontics of Oklahoma.
