Dr. Chitra P. Emperumal is a dual-trained specialist in Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine, with over eight years of multidisciplinary training at leading institutions, including the University of Southern California, UCSF, besides completing observership at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and post-doctoral research training at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. In addition to her extensive academic and hospital-based experience—including service as Chief Resident—she has also practiced in private clinical settings, providing patient-centered, evidence-based care.
Dr. Emperumal delivers comprehensive care for medically complex patients, with specialized expertise in oral toxicities associated with cancer therapies, supportive care in oral oncology, oral mucosal diseases, precancerous and cancerous lesions, salivary gland disorders, and complex orofacial pain, including neuropathic pain, burning mouth syndrome, and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs).
She has published widely in reputable peer-reviewed journals and collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare teams and her research has been supported through competitive scientific grants. Dr. Emperumal has a special interest in oral oncology and is currently a member of the Stephenson Cancer Centre. Dr. Emperumal is deeply engaged in both didactic and clinical teaching, serving as Course Director for Oral Medicine for predoctoral dental students as well as postgraduate residency programs.
In addition to her clinical and teaching roles, Dr. Emperumal is a full Member of the Graduate Faculty in Periodontics, with full voting rights and privileges to chair master’s committees and serve on doctoral committees.
Integrating clinical care, education, and research, Dr. Emperumal is dedicated to advancing patient outcomes and strengthening interdisciplinary understanding in oral medicine and orofacial pain.
