The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is currently accepting applications for our General Practice Residency (GPR) program for the 2021-2022 enrollment year. This program is a one year, postdoctoral program focused on providing advanced clinical and didactic experiences in general dentistry with intensive hospital experience. Our GPR provides training in endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, TMD and facial pain, implantology and bone grafting, oral surgery, and pediatrics. Residents present mid-June and conclude their study at the end of June the following year; upon completion they are rewarded a post graduate certificate. Our residents spend the majority of their time in the dental clinic, located on the UAMS main campus in Little Rock, Arkansas. Each resident has their own operatory, assistant, and patient population. We are a hospital clinic, and as such see hospital inpatients and dental clearance patients, in addition to patients from the community. Approximately eight weeks of the year are spent on hospital and clinical rotations, which include: Arkansas Children’s Hospital Oral Surgery Anesthesiology Otolaryngology Emergency Medicine Didactic coursework includes weekly lectures, monthly journal clubs, patient care conferences, and advanced treatment planning workshops. Residents also have access to various dental technologies including a CEREC CAD/CAM unit, an endodontic microscope, a soft tissue diode laser, and a CBCT machine. A grant we receive annually from Nobel Biocare allows residents to place up to ten implants at no cost to the patient, with their fee only including that of the restoration. Our program utilizes the ADEA PASS application (https://www.adea.org/pass/). All applicants are required to provide three faculty recommendations, a written application essay, and CV. Applications must be complete by October 1. Prior to beginning the program, applicants must have graduated from an ADA accredited dental school earning a DDS or DMD degree, be eligible to obtain an Arkansas State Dental License, and have passed national boards.
