Externship and Fellowship

Externship

For those not yet wishing to receive a master's, the Department of Periodontology offers an observational externship in periodontics for dental students and dentists who want to enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of Periodontology. This program is a non-degree program sponsored by the Department of Periodontics. Courses taken during this externship program will not receive Graduate College credit.

Specifically, the programs includes:

  • observing graduate periodontal clinic activities; 
  • lecture, seminar and clinical case conference attendance. 

Classroom activities involve classic, implant and current literature review seminars, clinical case conferences and other continuing education activities. 

Procedures performed in the graduate clinic on a routine basis involve periodontal osseous and regenerative surgeries; soft tissue procedures for root coverage and non-root coverage applications; implant placements with associated regenerative procedures; and ridge augmentation procedures, among others. 

*Assisting in surgical procedures will require OSHA, HIPAA and other relevant certification from the OU Health Sciences Center. If you are interested in assisting, please contact us ahead of your arrival so that we can provide a list of required documentation. While we will assist in obtaining the required certification, all relevant costs will be at the expense of the attendee.  

Program tuition is $750.00 per week for a maximum of eight weeks. The student will be responsible for all travel, incidental fees, personal computer, health insurance and living expenses above and beyond the program cost. The University has no availability for housing. Other mandatory insurance fees may also apply.  No funds, scholarships, loans or grants are available for this program from the OU College of Dentistry. 

At this time, the Department of Periodontics is unable to obtain or sponsor visas for international applicants. The applicant will be responsible for obtaining their own visa and/or other travel documentation.

Application Process

Requirements:

  • Dental degree OR a letter from the Dean of OU College of Dentistry stating that the applicant is attending a dental school. 
  • An updated curriculum vitae
  • A letter of intent

Attendance is suggested between September and April as most of the classroom activities occur during that period of time. However, the program is year-round and applications will be accepted anytime throughout the calendar year. Please contact us to verify if your time-frame for attendance will allow for maximum educational benefits and exposure. 

Acceptance in the Master of Science Graduate Periodontal program is not ensured upon completion of this program. However, this externship program will benefit participants wishing to apply to a degree-granting graduate program in Periodontics in our college or any other educational institution in the U.S.  

Fellowship

The Division of Periodontics at OUHSC offers an intensive full-time Fellowship in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. This fellowship is for dentists who want to enhance their knowledge and skills in the fields of Periodontic and Implant Dentistry. Opportunities for involvement in a research project leading to original publications also exist within this fellowship.

This fellowship is conducted by the Graduate Periodontics Program at OUHSC. Fellows will be enrolled in didactic courses, seminars and case conferences held by the Graduate Periodontics Program. Clinical exposure will be in the form of chairside assisting and participation in case conferences. Fellows will not be involved in direct patient care. The Division of Periodontics work closely with other divisions within the OUHSC to provide a broad exposure to interdisciplinary patient care and research activities.

Admission Process:

Upon submission of all relevant documentation, the applications will be reviewed by the admissions committee. An in-person or phone interview may be set up with the applicant at the discretion of the committee.

Admissions Requirement:

  • Completed application form
  • Application fee of $75.00 USD
  • Personal statement
  • Dental school transcripts(For international applicants, please send an evaluation of your transcripts performed by WES or ECE)
  • Copy of Dental School Diploma
  • English Proficiency – International applicants will need to provide proof of Proficiency in English in the form of a TOEFL test. TOEFL scores under 88 will not be accepted for admission.

Financial Information:

The tuition for this fellowship is $30,000.00 USD for twelve (12) months and $15,000.00 USD for six (6) months. The fellow will be responsible for all incidental fees, health insurance, and living expenses. Use of a personal computer will be invaluable to the educational experience and the fellow will be responsible for purchasing one. No funds, scholarships, loans or grants are available for this fellowship.

Please note that completion of this fellowship does not guarantee acceptance to a 3-year Graduate Periodontics Program.

At this moment, the Division of Periodontics is unable to grant visas for this course of study. International candidates must be able to reside legally within the US over the duration of this fellowship.
