Hygiene Baccalaureate Program - How to Apply

Admission to the Dental Hygiene Program is competitive.   Selection is based on the applicant’s post-secondary academic record, life experiences and potential for success in a baccalaureate program in dental hygiene.  New students are admitted for the fall semester only.  All application materials must be submitted by January 15th of the year in which admission is sought.  To be considered for admission, students must meet the following requirements and complete the listed instruction below:

Requirements

  1. Be in good standing with the last college or university attended.
  2. ACT or SAT individual component scores and composite scores.
  3. Minimum average GPA or 2.5 on a 4.0 scale with a grade of “C” or better on all specifically required courses.
  4. Minimum of 60 semester hours of transferable coursework from an accredited college/university.
  5. Foundational coursework (see OU Dental Hygiene pre-requisite coursework sheet) should be completed by or in progress in the spring semester of the year in which admission is sought.
  6. ALL pre-requisite coursework, excluding foundational courses, must be completed by the time the fall semester begins if an offer has been made.
  7. Applicants must investigate dental hygiene as a career prior to application by spending a minimum of 40 hours observing a dental hygienist.  Observation of a dentist does NOT meet this requirement.  Please complete and mail the 40 hour shadowing form.

  8. Please complete and submit online a University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) application that includes the prioritized site(s) for which the applicant wishes to be considered.

  9. Complete and mail a typewritten career statement.

Career Statement Form

  1. ​Submit online two letters of recommendation on letterhead or with writer’s address and phone number from individual familiar with applicant’s success or potential for successful completion of the program.
  2. Mail official transcripts from all high schools, colleges and/or universities attended.
  3. If English is the student’s second language, a minimum score of 250 is required on the national standardized TOEFL examination.
  4. If you receive an offer of acceptance into the program, it is contingent upon meeting the required “C” in all remaining pre-requisite coursework and a cumulative GPA of 2.5.
