Course Overview:
Most implants placed today are made of titanium and titanium alloys, which have a track record of long-term success. However, with a growing understanding of materials and long-term data, along with increasing reports of metal sensitivity and other health concerns related to the implantation of metals in dentistry and medicine, researchers have been exploring alternative biocompatible materials. Recent scientific research has demonstrated a link between implant material and the incidence of peri-implantitis and other systemic issues.
The discovery and development of advanced ceramics, such as zirconia, have expanded the use of ceramics in dentistry and dental implantology. Dental implants made from advanced ceramics like zirconia and zirconia composites have shown to be highly biocompatible, bioinert, and structurally stable, making them suitable for intraosseous implantation and prosthetic rehabilitation.
The leading five implant manufacturers now include ceramic implants in their product portfolios due to their growing acceptance as an alternative to titanium and the increasing demand from patients for metal-free implants. This presentation will discuss zirconia as an implantable bioceramic, including its rationale, indications, and benefits for metal-free teeth replacement from root to cusp.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the use of zirconia as an implant material
- Understand physiological and biological interaction and behavior of zirconia
- Compare the osseointegration process between zirconia and titanium implants
- Patient selection and best practices in the treatment planning for ceramic implants.
- Case specific restorative materials selection

Course Overview:
The challenge faced by all dental professionals today is to provide safe and effective dental treatment to their medically complex patients. To do so, they must frequently draw upon their knowledge of dental pharmacology. However, armed with relatively brief exposure to such a vast subject during formal education and faced with ever-changing medication therapy guidelines, many dental professionals simply cannot keep up with the latest trends in disease state management. To provide optimal care, it is imperative that all dental professionals be equally familiar with the dental considerations of general medicine as well as the medical considerations of general dentistry.
This presentation will provide an overview of dental pharmacology for the whole dental team in a two-part program. The first part will focus on the medical considerations of those drugs prescribed or administered in the practice of dentistry which may impact treatment of systemic disease. The second part will focus on the dental considerations of those prescription and OTC drugs and dietary supplements most frequently taken by patients which may impact dental treatment planning.Special emphasis will be given to delivering this essential information in a format which makes it practical and useful for all members of the dental team.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this lecture, participants will be able to:
- Discuss local anesthetic agents with respect to their mechanism of action, adverse effects and contraindications.
- Explain appropriate prescribing practices for opioid and non-opioid analgesics in the management of acute dental pain.
- Examine the pharmacology of anti-infective agents commonly used in dentistry and their clinical considerations.
- Identify the prescription medications most frequently encountered on a patient’s medical history and discuss their indications for use, adverse reactions and impact on dental therapy.
- Discuss the non-prescription medications most often used by dental patients and explain their impact on dental therapy, including situations which preclude their use.
- Identify the most popular herbal products and nutritional supplements and discuss their purported uses and dental considerations.
